Lone Soldier – an invitation to interesting encounters

It can make a big difference whether you translate the word “lone” as individual or alone. One can have a premonition of it when coming closer through Rafael Herlich’s portraits of young military personnel (“Portraits of Jewish Military Personnel”).

His photographs and the stories, in which young Jewish women and men explain, why they volunteered for the military service in the Israeli Defense Forces, show impressive belief and strength. Leaving not only the city, but also the country they are from, makes them special “individuals” in their units, even though they don’t want to be seen as such.

To have convinced them and to photographically create a balance between the specialty and the affiliation is Rafael Herlich’s artistic and conceptual merit. This balance is, too, the attraction for viewing and reading of the ‘Lone Soldiers’.

The portraits show – in photograph and text – a memorable combination of confidence and reflectiveness. And they show the double bond of the ‘Lone Soldiers’ with Israel: The bond, which inspired them to make the decision and the deepened bond, which grows during their service for their homeland Israel. An additional benefit, while engaging in the portraits, is to learn about this unique way to join the Israeli army.

The German-Israeli society continues with this project a proven and productive cooperation, in the best way, with Rafael Herlich and wishes it’s best for the exhibition, as well as for the book – and hopes for more interesting projects and cooperation to come.

‘Lone Soldiers’ is not only an exhibition and a book, but also an invitation for interesting encounters. It’s to be hoped that many will accept this invitation.
